IT happens every year.
Network Ten spend weeks talking up the big-name stars set to enter the jungle on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, only for the B-list celebs themselves to rather dampen the hype once the show starts, when it emerges that even they don’t know who each other are.
It happened to a couple of unfortunate celebs during this year’s premiere — including the wonderful Kerry Armstrong, celebrated star of Lantana and Seachange with an acting career spanning more than 40 years.
As actors go, she’s one of our best — but controversial tennis champ Bernard Tomic clearly had no idea who she was. The two contestants shared an awkward few minutes together upon meeting, Armstrong good-naturedly asking the 25-year-old sporting star if he knew her name.
“Yes. How do you spell it actually?” Tomic fibbed.
From there, Armstrong engaged her new campmate in a painful guessing game, running him through the letters of the alphabet, stopping when they got to ‘K’.
Perhaps she thought the mere mention of the letter ‘K’ would make Tomic scream: “OF COURSE! YOU’RE MULTIPLE-AFI-AWARD-WINNING — YET STILL DEEPLY UNDERRATED — ACTING LEGEND KERRY ARMSTRONG!”
Later, former Top Model contestant Simone Holtznagel — hardly a household name herself — had the episode’s most awkward foot-in-mouth moment when she surveyed her fellow celebs, mentally ticking them off against the clues Ten had teased in the weeks leading up to the premiere.
“Shouldn’t there be one more girl?” she asked. “Like, a pop star?”
Uh, that “single-named female pop star” Ten had been teasing was 80s I Think We’re Alone Now hit maker Tiffany, Simone — and as your fellow contestants pointed out, she was standing right next to you.
Still, Simone did give us perhaps the episode’s best moment, giving viewers her unfiltered initial opinion of Tomic:
